Wearable IoT Technology Helps Combat Epilepsy

Despite the prevalence of epilepsy, it can take years to diagnose correctly and treat, with monitoring being costly. A European technology leader in smart remote-monitoring medical solutions found a better way to diagnose and monitor epilepsy. It designed a suit-like device equipped with medical-grade sensors and used Altair SmartCore™, part of the Altair SmartWorks™ Internet of Things (IoT) suite, to collect data gathered by the suit’s sensors and transfer it directly to healthcare providers.

The flexible, open-architecture SmartCore platform securely collects and analyzes biometric data in real time, and it’s fully compliant with healthcare regulations.

A Concept-to-Digital-Twin Product Development Demonstration

A Concept-to-Digital-Twin Product Development Demonstration

Presentation by Nic Minnaar, Application Engineer at Altair.

Simulation technology has been a powerful tool in the arsenal of product developers because the technology buffers designers from the consequences of the physical world. The designers have thus been enabled to virtually explore design concepts and then patch these concepts where they lack performance or exhibit shortfalls. Many product developers and operators are now also embracing the concept of consolidating the physical and virtual worlds in which their engineered products live after the design phases of the product life cycle are over. Perhaps like them, you have also bought into the idea of extracting additional value from your engineered products by exploiting digital twin technology but are unsure of exactly how this may be done. In this workshop, an inverted aero-pendulum will be used as the demonstration vessel for a concept-to-digital-twin product development process using the Altair software suite. It will be shown that most of the effort that it takes to develop the models that are used during the design phases can be fruitfully recycled once the product is actualized to unlock additional value during the service stage of a product’s life.

Test Twins - Digital Twins for the Product Development Process

Presentation by Alvaro Everlet, VP Business Development at Altair.

Digital Twins of test equipment help align physical simulation (lab testing) and virtual simulation (CAE). While typical CAE models make assumptions about the physical simulation initial conditions and the operational environment during testing, a Digital Twin accurately reproduces test activity and can predict future states to determine fixture or product failures. The twin will also ensure test set up is repeatable and robust through an improved understanding of system sensitivities.

How to Feed Simulation Models with SmartWorks

How to Feed Simulation Models with SmartWorks

Presentation by Oliver Breuer, Head of Software Engineering at FLUIDON.

There is a life for simulation models beyond the development process. Despite the large amount of data that can be collected from industrial facilities, the real benefit is behind colorful graphics and charts. To get there, the data provided by the connected components of an IoT capable system has to be analysed and put into context. So, the question is not what can be done with all the collected data but how to generate useful information. Using a simulation model in automated analysis allows estimating the condition of a subsystem or component, even though it is not directly monitored by dedicated sensors. Models created with DSHplus by FLUIDON (APA) can be exported to run as processing modules within IoT Platforms such as SmartWorks by Altair. They can be conditioned with the collected data and put it into the context of system behavior in order to make concrete statements about the current state of the system and its components. These digital twins turn the previous service life of simulation models into a closed cycle that includes product development, commissioning and operation and starts again when revisions and new developments are made on the basis of the existing system.

Real-Time Foundation Monitoring for Omnifor

Real-Time Foundation Monitoring for Omnifor

In the western part of the Netherlands, the soil has insufficient bearing capacity to allow for the construction of buildings and houses. To overcome this issue, buildings in this area have been built on timber pile foundations. These foundations have to be fully submerged in water to avoid pile deterioration from rotting and fungi. Property owners wanted a way to monitor the structural condition of their timber pile foundations. Omnifor teamed up with Altair SmartWorks and created a platform for structural health monitoring to track any signs of deterioration or shifting of the foundation. Data is collected at a specific rate to track the evolution of the deterioration along with an estimate of how long the property owner has until repairs are necessary.

IoT in Development and Production

IoT in Development and Production

Buzzwords such as IoT and Digital Twin are not new to the digital world. They have been gaining momentum in development and production discussions as the digital transformation of production becomes more relevant. But how is it possible to truly integrate the internet of things in development and production and what are the benefits of connected products? While there is still debate over whether consumers are interested in having a “smart refrigerator” collecting data to order milk, matters are quite different for a manager in an industrial facility. Data collected in this sector can lead to more efficient processes and offer forecasts on maintenance intervals, the remaining lifespan of a product, or its functional safety.
